Lolli’s Lesson: WAIT FOR IT!
Learning to latch a baby comes with some very important steps that are crucial to understanding and alleviating possible frustration in the beginning for both mom and baby. We discussed positioning of mom’s nipple across from baby’s nose here. That’s the beginning.
Now, comes the next step…
Waiting. Yep, that’s right! Waiting for the BIG, HUGE, WIDE OPEN MOUTH! This is imperative in achieving a deep latch that is going to give the baby the most effective feeding AND just as importantly, a comfortable, pain-free breastfeeding experience for mom.
When mom is comfortable and baby is transferring milk efficiently? WE HAVE ARRIVED!!
It’s super hard to be patient waiting for that wide open mouth, but I promise you, it is worth the wait! There is no place for prying a baby’s mouth open. It will get you no where but on an island of frustration. Trust the process by beginning with your baby’s nose across from you nipple. Then wait. As soon as you see that wide open mouth—bring that baby to breast!
Getting off to a great start in the hospital as baby is learning is so important. Following these steps will help during this “practice” of breastfeeding. And if all of that practice still leaves you with some frustration once you get home? Give me a call! Latching a baby is MY FAVORITE!
