Lolli’s Lesson: Exercise!

Can you exercise while breastfeeding? You absolutely can! YES!!!! In fact, we recommend you begin some type of exercise after your physician has cleared you to do so—which is normally around 6 weeks postpartum. Clearly, if you are having any physical issues at all whether that be blurred vision, dizziness, headaches, swelling, bleeding or pain DO NOT CONTINUE and contact your provider.

Walking is a wonderful way to begin moving your body. Wearing your baby for a quick stroll around the block, breaking out the stroller for a longer walk, or simply letting someone else hold your baby for 30 minutes while you get some fresh air are great ways to get started.

Moderate exercise is key to helping you feel better physically and mentally. And when you feel good overall? You will be a better mommy for your baby. Moderate exercise will not decrease your milk supply. In some cases with strenuous exercise, moms have noticed baby responding differently to breastfeeding—-not as eager, pulling away, etc. Some have attributed this to lactic acid buildup in mom’s body which may affect the way the milk tastes to baby. As quickly as lactic acid builds up when beginning a strenuous exercise routine, it quickly disappears.

Right now as fall is just around the corner, getting outside to move is the perfect time. Cooler temps and the beautiful changing colors of the season will improve your mood, protect your mental health, and the physical benefits of moving your body will make for a happy mom and happy baby!
