Lolli’s Lesson: Nose to Nipple

Positioning of a baby when learning to breastfeed is important in ensuring a proper latch. The inclination is to position a baby’s mouth across from the nipple—but it’s not a “bull’s eye” target approach to latching, even though it may seem logical.

Baby’s nose across from the nipple is the position that will illicit a wide-open mouth response from the baby which is the correct way to latch. Prying a baby’s mouth open to stick in the nipple does not result in a pain-free latch or a latch that is effective in transferring milk—which ultimately is the very reason we are latching a baby in the first place!

Positioning baby’s nose to nipple is the first step—-then WAITING for that wide-open mouth is the next step to successful latching. Knowing these simple tips can help alleviate the stress and frustration that sometimes presents itself in learning to breastfeed a newborn.
