Lolli’s Lesson: Your Boobs are Sisters NOT Twins

My three girls.

(they couldn’t be more different)

Breastfeeding is stressful enough. Sometimes things don’t make one bit of sense. And never more true than when a mom begins to pump her breasts and realizes that one is making more milk than the other!? Sound familiar? This is a frequently asked question that I receive and my response almost every time is this is normal. It is not uncommon to pump more from one breast than the other.

Many years ago during one of my trainings an instructor told us “breasts are sisters not twins”—such a great analogy when helping to ease the anxiety of pumping moms when this question arises. Of course, there are other questions that I will be asking when talking with a mom with this concern. How many total ounces is she able to pump? Does her baby breastfeed on both sides equally? And more times than not—all is going normally and breastfeeding is going well—it’s just the amount of ounces per side is not equal. This can really get to some of us Type A people who want everything to be nice and concise…and predictable!

One sister is smiling and the other a duck face…and so it goes—-never exactly alike!!

If your baby is gaining weight adequately and breastfeeding is going well? Don’t sweat the small stuff when one boob gives you more than the other. We’re looking for the total amount of ounces you are able to produce for your baby. One boob just may be a slacker? And the other an over-achiever! But that’s a Lolli’s Lesson for another day…stay tuned!!
