Lolli’s Lesson: Expect the Weight Loss
Your baby is going to lose weight. In almost 27 years of working in the nursery with newborns and weighing them daily, I can count maybe less than a handful of babies who did not lose some amount of weight at the time of discharge from birth. I prefer not to use the term normal, but it’s true. It’s normal for your newborn to lose some amount of weight. It is!! In fact, most of the time we tell families not to expect babies to be back up to birth weight for two weeks. Yes, that’s right. We want to see that your baby has gained back to birth weight by two weeks of age.
There are many different ways to know if your baby is getting enough at the breast, but it’s not as easy as looking at the bottle to see how many ounces your baby just consumed. Wouldn’t life be so much simpler had God designed our breasts with a measuring gauge?
Your pediatrician or family physician will help you determine when there is a cause for concern in regards to your baby’s weight. And if there is a concern, we can help you manage an effective, nutritive feeding and establish a full milk supply to get your baby heading in the right direction with an increase on the scale!
