Lolli’s Lesson: Get Comfy!

Before you bring that sweet newborn anywhere near you to breastfeed, you need to GET COMFY!!! That’s right. Mamas–you get comfy first, and then we’ll bring that baby to you.

So many times, moms will bend over backwards (literally) to try to get their babies to latch. I get it, I really do. However, your comfort level needs to be a priority so you are able to bring your baby to the breast in a relaxed state. Especially in those early hours and days when perhaps you had a vaginal repair or episiotomy, used muscles you didn’t know you had while pushing, or especially following a cesarean section–you are going to have some discomfort in just sitting there, let alone trying to position yourself to feed your baby.

One thing I love to tell moms as I help them get comfortable prior to breastfeeding is to “bring your baby to your breast, not your breast to your baby”. There are obvious reasons for this that go beyond even your comfort level prior to your baby latching on to eat. This is important to keep in mind as you get positioned and ready to feed your baby, well before your baby is even in your arms. If you are unsure of how to help yourself get comfortable, your nurses and lactation consultants can help–that’s why we’re there!

Get comfy BEFORE you bring the baby close to you and discover a better breastfeeding experience that will benefit both you and your baby.
